Quilts of Valor - Under Our Wings 05/22/2011
I had the honor of playing the role of Coach at another , Quilts of Valor (QOV), "Under Our Wings" event in West Des Moines, IA on May 21st, 2011. Marianne Fons organized 16 teams of Coaches and Rookies. All of the Rookies did a great job making their quilt tops. My Rookie Liberty, did a wonderful job on her quilt, with the help of Diane who tagged team the Coach responsibility half way through the event. A very touching moment was when Marianne presented a beautiful QOV quilt that she had made to American hero Dan Collins, a veteran of the Viet Nam conflict. Dan was a Green Beret who is a Silver Star and Purple Heart recipient. Dan was present as he provided lunch for the event on behalf of the VFW, and was promoting a VFW recruitment campaign for the VFW women's auxiliary. My Mom, Faye, got me started quilting over 25 years ago by giving me some quilting essentials for Christmas. After several years of being an accountant I decided to trade my shreds for threads! I now have a dream job as a sewing specialist and TV Floor Director for Fons & Porter/ Love of Quilting in Winterset, IA. Although I continue to learn, I enjoy giving quilting classes to share my enthusiasm and knowledge of quilting. I love seeing others enjoy quilting as much as I do.
